I have no Internet

The Friday before Thanksgiving, Husband gets out of work, turns on his phone and has a text message from an unknown number saying the open wi-fi at the house has been locked, their computer is broken and they don't know who can look at it for free, and any emails since the last one they sent to Husband haven't been read.  Then they say they want to know if they can pick up the kids early on Tuesday.

Husband texts back later that day and asks who it is. (We've both had the same phone numbers for 10+ years but we still get "wrong number" texts)  The person texts back: "It's [The Ex]." (??)  Husband asks when she got a new number; The Ex says she didn't get a new number, this number is for texting only, someone found it for her for free.  The Ex goes on to complain about how they sometimes get messages hours late or even the next day, sometimes they don't get the whole message if it's long.  "Not reliable but all I have" (Okay, so now we're fairly positive this is The Ex.  No one else complains this much about something they pay absolutely nothing for)

Husband texts back, asks how they get it for free, says maybe he can get it too.  Suddenly, The Ex stops texting him.  No text, no phone call, nothing.  That's it.

My curiosity got the better of me.  I saved the text number under The Ex's name in my phone.  Then I searched "free text app" in the Play Store, downloaded the first app listed and created an account.  The app loaded my contacts and immediately sent me a notification:  "[The Ex] joined Pinger!"

I go onto Pinger's FAQ section of their website.  Can you use Pinger without an Internet connection?  No - you need either Internet or wi-fi access for Pinger to work.

The Ex is texting Husband from an app that requires Internet connection, and in those texts The Ex is saying she has no Internet access so she hasn't read any of Husband's emails.  The Ex is literally using the Internet to tell Husband that she doesn't have any Internet access.

Going back through our phone records, The Ex had been texting Son from this free texting number since mid-October.  The Ex didn't tell Husband she had a texting number until November 23rd - but according to The Ex, Husband is the one who doesn't communicate.
